Designing for the first frost

In Minnesota the season changes in a week. A resolved plan has already decided where boots, coats, salt and cold air go before the first frost arrives.

The arrival sequence

The garage opens into a drop zone with a bench, a drain and a closed cabinet for each person — not an open row of hooks. Wet gear stays in one room with a door.

From there the path to the kitchen is short and on hard, warm flooring. Snow is never carried across wood.

Warmth where you stand

Radiant heat is placed at thresholds, in the mudroom and in the primary bath, where bare feet and cold air meet. It is the quietest comfort in the house and the one owners mention first.

The four-season porch is detailed with the same envelope as the main rooms, so it stays a room in January rather than becoming storage.

What it changes

Winter stops reorganising the house. The great room stays the great room; the entry stays clean; the porch stays in use.

“Winter stops reorganising the house.”
