Life at 310

Lock and leave, without leaving the design behind

Buyers arriving at a maintained community are usually asked to accept a smaller idea of a house in exchange for a simpler week. That trade is a habit, not a rule.

What people are really buying

Not a smaller house — a shorter list. No ladder in October, no mower in June, no snowblower at six in the morning. The list leaving is the product.

What they are not asking for is a narrower plan, thinner walls or a great room that shares a party line with a neighbour's television.

How the plan holds

One story, all primary living on a single plane. A great room and a guest suite that can be used at the same hour because the partitions between them are insulated and the doors are solid core.

A porch that works in four seasons rather than five weeks. A lower level that finishes when it is wanted, not because it was framed to be sold.

The week that results

Leave for three weeks in February and nothing waits for you. Return and the house is the same temperature, the same quiet, the same order.

That is the whole ambition: an easier week that costs the architecture nothing.
