What a complete drawing set actually contains

The number of decisions a builder makes on site is inversely proportional to the number made on paper.

Working drawings and plan sheets laid out on a table
Working drawings

Beyond plans and elevations

Interior elevations for every millwork wall. Reflected ceiling plans with the lighting laid out against furniture, not against the middle of the room. Sections through every threshold and every change in ceiling.

Door and hardware schedules. Stone and tile layouts drawn to a starting point rather than left to a setter's judgement at seven in the morning.

Why it matters at the site

A question asked on site is answered in a minute and lived with for thirty years. A question answered in the drawing set is answered once, by the people who set the brief.

What the owner sees

Fewer change orders, and a house that resembles the one they agreed to. Nothing important feels added later, because almost nothing was.

“A question answered on paper is answered once.”
